Second Restaurant (Bar) Review

A week ago my high school, PCEP, class of '06 held an ad-hoc bar crawl in downtown Plymouth. Most of the communication was set up through Facebook and without an official organizer we still managed to pull in at least 200 from my graduating class. Downtown Plymouth (DTP) has quite a few bars, and the ones I visited were: The Ironwood Grill, 1999 Tavern, The Penn Grille, Hermans, and Sean O'Callaghan's. This is a disclaimer of sorts but the following reviews are very informal and are based on a short time spent at each during a tour. With that in mind I will review on three categories (selection, price and atmosphere; each out of 5) and give a short synopsis of how I felt about the establishments.

Hermans - Hermans is the furthest away from the center of DTP and may not be found by anyone but the more adventurous of people, however it is a gem for those who do. The prices here are of the best in DTP and the selection is nothing to scoff at. They also have a wide variety of fried pub food, and they know how to cook a burger. It has a very lively atmosphere much like a pub. Hermans is more of a place where you would spend a night out with the guys or go out to grab a burger and a beer, rather than a dress up date.

The Ironwood Grill - The Ironwood Grill would be a great place to start off a tour, as they are more of a restaurant than a bar. They have a menu of savory items fresh from the grill, though this isn't to say they can't mix a mean cocktail. The Ironwood is really just one giant room with a divider between the booth area and the bar area. I kind of like the openness of it, and it seems a bit more fancy than just a regular bar or restaurant.

1999 Tavern - Much like Hermans in that it is a bit away from the central area. It is noticeably smaller than the other bar and doesn't really have a unique atmosphere. What it does have is drink specials, so this is also one of the cheaper places in DTP.

Sean O'Callaghan's - It is easy to see why Sean O'Callaghan's is one of the more popular bars of Plymouth, there is a large area to accommodate many people, a very large drink selection, and they even have a live band! I didn't get to spend as much time here as I would have liked but it did seem like a rockin' place while I was there. They have a good supply of Irish beers and whiskey as well as the usual bar stock, and they can whip up some bar food favorites.

The Penn - As the night waned on and many had gone home, I spent the rest of my evening at the Penn. I probably can't comment on the atmosphere as there were a high concentration of people from the bar crawl there. It is a rather small place for so many people to be in, so I can imagine the atmosphere to be lively instead of chaotic.

I know many of the people who would find this blog (through our writing class) are under 21, but these are some places to keep in mind when you are of age and don't know where to go.
